Rotterdam A to Z - F

F - Food

Food

I thought that Rotterdam didn’t have that much to offer in terms of cuisine. Well I was part wrong and part right. There are a lot of places to go out and eat at. But there aren’t a lot of good places to go out and eat (if you compare Rotterdam to other, second-largest cities in Europe).  When looking at the price/quality ratio.

So let’s see, what do we have?

Here are but a selected few.

‘Open’ eetcafe (Jacobusstraat 215, tel. 2136257): one of my favorite places in the city.

Relaxed atmosphere, quiet, cozy and amazing sandwiches and salads. You can come there to read and have some coffee. The best time to go is mid-day in any type of weather (if it’s raining – it’s nice to sit and hide from the cold over a nice bowl of soup, and if the weather’s nice, the place fills with light and you can enjoy a nice refreshing salad.

‘De Gouden Wok’ (Parkhaven 21, Scheepvaart- kwartier, tel. 225 005): Not that it is one of the more quality places you’ll eat at, but still it’s quite an experience. An enormous Chinese/Japanese restaurant that fits a few hundreds (!!). Looks almost like a wedding hall. The décor is eastern kitsch (but it really adds to the atmosphere) and this is the deal: for 13 euro in the middle of the week or for 17 at weekends you can enjoy an all you can eat buffet with a lot of different things. Fish, meat, veggie, sushi and a million vegetables. Choose your own components and have one of the chefs make it for you on a grill, wok, steamed or on a hot platter... Really fun and the prices are great.

‘Lux ‘('s-Gravendijkwal 133, tel. 4762206): more on the pricey side, but boy is it well worth it! A fancy Italian restaurant, but not “uncomfortable fancy” if you know what I mean. Great space and tasty small dishes (take a few and share). The prices aren’t higher than any of the fancy restaurants around but service and original dishes make it one of the better ones. Take your time, enjoy the atmosphere and have a slow dinner. Afterwards, stop right next door for a beer at ‘Dizzy’ (Review at Bar section) to finish the night.

‘Bazar’

The alternative that became mainstream. Every big city has one of those. This Moroccan/Mediterranean restaurant is the place to be. What can I say? Great food, great location great terrace (for those rare summer days). Come alone or with a bog group people – the place is very big and has some very unique tastes. As always I recommend taking a lot of the small appetizer dishes and breads. I haven’t had them myself but I heard very good things about the couscous and humus.
