Museums
No doubt one of Europe’s top cultural cities has plenty to offer in terms of Museums.
There is a wide range of museums; there are those that offer a specific niche such as the 'Maritieme' museum and there are the more “general” art museums,
if that’s what they’re called, that cover a wide range of art works including sculptures paintings and digital art.
While living in Rotterdam you can’t help but notice that the museums and the art world are part of the cities heartbeat.
There are always adds up in the city before new exhibitions and tons of fliers announcing happenings. It is also part of the urban discussion,
and I feel it more in Rotterdam then I did in any city I lived in. The arts are without a doubt more a part of the city’s life then they are in many other places.
So what does this wide selection have to offer us? Lets have a look at a few of the most known ones (probably those you must see if you’re on a short visit):
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen: I believe it is the most diversified art museum and one of the oldest. It ranks as one of the greatest painting collections in Europe and has pieces from the 14th century till today.
The highlight of the museum has to be its collection of old masters housed in the first floor. But that isn’t even close to all of what they’ve got;
Van Eyck, Rubens, Rembrandt, Monet, Kandinsky, Magritte, Dalí, Pisanello, Dürer, Rembrandt, Watteau, and Cézanne are but a few of the legends youll see there.
It is the museum for museum lovers. Highly recommended.
Maritiem Museum Rotterdam: the place for sea lovers! And wouldn’t the city with largest (or second largest) harbor have one?
The Maritieme museum is the naval collection of Rotterdam. Appropriately located at the head of leuvehaven harbor, it was founded over 130 years ago by Prince Hendrik.
The first floor of the museum is about everything you could possibly want to know (and some you don’t) with shipbuilding; Plans, materials, star maps etc.
The second floor is occupied with models, steam engines, cranes, and nautical instruments. Also, there are a lot of activities for children.
Kunsthal: one of the more interesting and discussed structures in Rotterdam. The art house was built by the renowned architecture Rem Koolhaas.
The museum is known for holding major temporary exhibitions. Another aspect is that this museum holds no permanent works (except perhaps for the building itself – which is one of the reasons come to visit) which gives this museum a half gallery feeling.
