Rotterdam A to Z - A

A: Airport, Apartments

Airport

Rotterdam Airport: Well believe it or not (I didn’t) Rotterdam has an
airport! That’s right ladies and gentlemen, in many cases there is no
need for you to go all the way to Schipol to leave this country.
According to the last check, this is a list of places you can go to
without leaving Rotterdam:
Alicante
Antalya
Barcelona
Berlin
Bodrum
Dalaman
Dublin
Faro
Girona
Guernsey
Hamburg
Heraklion
Jersey
Kopenhagen
Las Palmas
Liverpool
London City Airport
London Heathrow
London Stansted
Malaga
Manchester
Oslo
Palma de Mallorca
Rhodos
Stockholm
Tenerife

It’s
quite amazing really. If you’re going to one of the places listed
above, I fully recommend using Rotterdam airport. Why go through all
the hassle of schiphol, and spending money getting there and just the
noise and stuff, when you can peacefully use this small, warm,
‘home-feeling’ airport. It’s very cozy. AND… there are plenty of really
cheap flights leaving from there.

Apartments

Like in every other place there are a few ways
to find an apartment in Rotterdam: the safest way would be through an
agency. Taking that option would be the easiest, all the work of
walking around and bargaining is done for you, but, and for some, this
‘but’ is quite crucial, you’re gonna pay for it. Having an agency find
an apartment for you will probably cost you around one-months rate
(unless the agency has a set rate). If you add that to the one month
advance you’ll probably pay plus security (another months rate) and
other little details (contracts etc…) you might end up paying almost
3.5 times the apartments rent right up front. That’s also probably why
nobody really uses these agencies for there are much cheaper
alternatives.

Have no fear, there are other ways. Internet
for one is cheap and abundant. For about 10 euro, you can get around 20
contacts that meet your specified criteria. That’s really cheap, and
reliable. It shouldn’t be too hard (try www.directwonen.nl ) You can
also check out ViaVia a magazine that comes out twice a week and has
everything you can possibly be looking for (even things you didn’t know
you were looking for – but you were!)(You can also check online
www.viavia.nl)
If you’re lucky, you’ll find a place for about 20 euro.
One
really annoying cost is this thing called service cost. Not every place
has it, and the rate depends on your neighborhood, and building of
course. Service cost is like maintenance cost and it ranges from about
15 – 90 (!!) euro per month. The funny thing about it is that if you’re
paying 90 euros service cost, you’re probably living in a pretty modern
house, and you don’t really need any maintenance.
