"Passionate Magazines’ special presentation over Bret Easton Ellis".

What would Bret have to say??
What would Bret Easton Ellis have to say??

A special event for the release of the new Passionate Magazine was held last night at hotel New York. A literature magazine targeted at writers and poets. The theme of the evening was Bret Easton Ellis, the critically acclaimed American writer ("less than zero", "American Psycho"). I’m wondering what he would have to say about the event, which topic was "Passionate Magazines’ special presentation over Bret Easton Ellis".

The evening worked as a cultural event, there were sketches (not really funny ones; the room was empty in 10 min), poems were read, a band, dj's and a colorful and interesting crowd. But for those who came to hear and discuss Easton Ellis, the evening was a flop. It was more about being there and showing yourself than anything else.
Talking to the crowd, you would discover a mixture of intellectuals, writers, fans, wannabees and those who just tag along to see and be seen. The main problem of the occasion was that it looked like it was planned to serve those who tag along; more as a popular and mainstream event and less as an intellectual event that discussed Easton Ellis.
The only thing that served those who came for the real topic of the evening was a 40 min debate, after which many were disappointed.

One of the criticisms against his books is that he found a niche and is sticking to it. A format of a story in which he fits new characters (and sometimes the same old characters) but the essence remains the same. This essence is said to be nihilistic, no belief system, a culture that is a result of popular culture; A culture that has lost interest in practically anything.

Ironically the evening seemed like something from one of his books. Depicting a culture that has simply lost interest and is addicted to its own popularity. What’s important are the camera flashes, shaking hands, and having a drink, rather then the discourse surrounding Ellis and his books. Too bad, because the potential was there.

Not the place to discuss him, But perhaps the place to reflect him.
