Momenteel staan gebouwen langer leeg en liggen bouwterreinen langdurig braak. Bouwprojecten worden vertraagd of zelfs geschrapt. Hierdoor is er discussie over de gangbare stadsontwikkeling, die nog vaak gefocust is op eindbeelden. Met andere woorden: niet alleen de horizon is interessant, maar ook de weg daar naar toe. In de tussentijd is het noodzakelijk om onderzoek te blijven doen naar alternatieve strategieën. Zo bezien is de tussentijd een fase waarin ruimte bestaat voor experiment, ontwikkeling en creatie van nieuwe waarden.
Many of our cities are filled with vacant building sites and buildings, some of which stand empty and undeveloped for years, while construction projects are being delayed or even abandoned completely. Standard approaches to urban development, which still often concentrate on the envisaged end results, need to be radically re-examined. We must reflect on what can be achieved en route, rather than focusing solely on the lure of distant promises. This perspective repositions the interim as a phase with scope for experimentation and the creation of new values. During Pecha Kucha Night Rotterdam volume 25, architects, artists, designers, philosophers and users will be presenting inspiring examples of this novel approach.
